Isaiah speaks...
To the plumbers:
--Well, I can talk, but I don't really have a name.
--That's a really fine water tank you got there.
--Daddy protects the womenfolk at night.
To his mother:
--You're the best girl in all the world.
--Oh, you gave me chocolate chips. How lovely you are!
--Watching Bernadette descend the stairs: "I see little tiny feet gracefully stepping down."
--Recounting an outing with Daddy: "We saw some trucks, and then we scampered about looking for more."
On cosmic occurrences (and architecture):
--Driving home from West Hartford, we saw a sunset so distractingly beautiful that I missed our exit. Isaiah's description: "The sun is filling up the air."
--On a rainy night, commenting on the height of our apartment building: "It is so tall it seems to touch the dark rainy moon."

Bernadette now
Spins in circles, says some intelligible words, jabbers sentences we don't understand, understands much more of what we say than she can tell us, directs us with urgent commands and tugs of the hand, demands to descend stairs with help rather than being carried, cracks up at her brother, touches Isaiah's carefully arranged toys, dances, and wants to leave with me when I go to work.
